The Evolutionary Map of the Universe (EMU) is a radio survey of the southern sky using the Australia
Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder. For the EMU survey to truly be successful, radio data from the EMU
survey needs to be compared with other types of data from other telescopes. To do so, multiple
different types of images and data need to be loaded into an image viewer to compare and analyse
across wavelengths and telescopes.
Current programs and software used for analysing and visualising astronomical images include
applications such as CARTA, Aladin, and DS9. Our client has determined that these are not suitable
enough for use for a number of reasons. Aladin, while a powerful tool, generally does not provide a
good user interface and is poor in user experience. CARTA does most of the desirable functions,
however, it is unable to view and manipulate HiPs surveys. DS9 is an older tool that does not have all
the functionality in more modern tools. While each of these are close to supporting what is needed, a
custom solution that covers all bases was developed.
